Volunteers arrived in Costa Rica on Wednesday, July 8th
and Thursday, July 9th. Those
who arrived on Wednesday morning had a relaxing afternoon in the hotel in Alajuela, Costa
Rica, meeting the Volunteers who arrived on
the evening flight on the 8th in the hotel that evening. On the morning of July 9th, this
first group of Volunteers (all Volunteers arriving on July 8th)
traveled to Pérez Zeledón from San
Jose and began briefing. They spent two days in Casa de la Juventud, our partnering agency’s building preparing for
their summer! These Volunteers were
picked up by community members on Saturday, July 11. The group that arrived on July 9th
spent the night in a hotel in Alajuela with Project Staff, and then traveled to
Pérez Zeledón on the morning of the 10th to begin their briefing,
also at Casa de la Juventud. This second groups of Volunteers was picked
up by community members Sunday morning to head out to their communities and
begin their summer projects! During
briefing Volunteers created and preformed route skits once they received their
partnerships and Project Supervisor assignments, and they were introduced to
typical Costa Rican food including Gallo
Pinto and mamones! All Volunteers arrived safely and were
excited to begin their summer!
“What surprised me were not the differences between cultures, but the connection that I formed with a culture other than my own. Living in Isla Baez was a journey in which I was the pupil and the teacher, the friend and the daughter, the health worker, and the citizen.”
