Saludos desde
Herrera y Los Santos! This past weekend all Volunteers gathered in La
Villa in Los Santos to participate in Midterm. Here, the Volunteers had the
opportunity to share their experiences among each other as well as relax and
reenergize. The Volunteers had time to explore the cities of Chitre and Las
Tablas, relax by the hotel pool, and enjoy a night of dancing and movies. The Volunteers
were excited to be joined by twelve new AMIGOS Volunteers and bonded with their
new partners during a day at the beach. On the last day of Midterm, the Volunteers
and youth from their communities took part in a youth encuentro (workshop) facilitated by Project Staff and our partner
agency, Panama Verde. Volunteers participated in activities to promote
teamwork, open communication, and learned about the importance of protecting
the environment. The workshop concluded with the Volunteers each presenting a
poster about the CBI, fundraiser and/or activities they have been involved in
their respective communities. This gave the Volunteers a chance to showcase all
their hard work as well as be inspired by others. In the next few weeks Volunteers
and their new partners will be beginning construction of the CBIs. Some
examples include parque (park), cancha de basketbol (basketball court)
or reparacion de la casa communal
(repairing the community house). The Volunteers feel like they have become a
part of their community and cannot believe how fast time has flown by!
“Both our children left Houston as fun-loving, typical teenagers and returned from their AMIGOS experience with new-found confidence and maturity and a real sense of what life is like beyond our community.”
