The Volunteers’ last week in community is underway! This
week, 5,700 trees were delivered to communities to support a reforestation
effort around schools and water sources. Many Volunteers are spending their
last week planting trees, finishing up their community-based initiatives (CBIs),
painting murals and enjoying their final days with their host families and
community members. As the project comes to a close, everyone is looking forward
to a festive despedida (going away
party) on August 2nd in Matagalpa. Every host family and an
outstanding youth counterpart from each community will be recognized, and we
are excited for a live performance from one of our CARE contacts who, inspired
by the Volunteers' experience, has written an original song about AMIGOS in
Matagalpa. After saying good-bye to their host families, Volunteers will be
whisked away for a two-night stay in León, one of Nicaragua's beautiful
colonial cities. In addition to experiencing a different part of the country
rich in history and culture, Volunteers will enjoy a morning on the pacific
coast. We will also be conducting evaluations and activities to prepare Volunteers
for their return home. Project Staff couldn't be prouder of the Volunteers'
growth and hard work this summer. We feel that our first year working in
Matagalpa has been an amazing success, and we are confident that our project
has laid the groundwork for a wonderful future for AMIGOS in Matagalpa.
“I continue to be amazed by the profound feeling of "family" there is in AMIGOS. It is unique and precious. I will be eternally grateful for all that AMIGOS has given my daughter, so much more than I could have given her as a parent. She is a "richer" person today because of AMIGOS.”
