AMIGOS Testimonials

"I honestly think that it is one of the best volunteer programs that I've been through. I think the kind of sensitivity and awareness training that they give you is better than anything I've had."

"Since AMIGOS I have pursued a career in Media and Entertainment. The subjects of many of the projects I have chosen to focus on deal with the meeting of different cultures or one individual's experiences exploring another culture. This fascination is in no small way a direct result of my experiences working in Honduras with AMIGOS. In fact, I first got the idea for my on-going project, "A Moment on Earth," while at the bottom of a latrine we had dug in Honduras. My mind kept trying to imagine where other people I knew would be at that exact time in worlds that seemed so far away and so different. I promised myself that one day I would make a film to capture that idea. On August 5th and 6th, 2004 that dream came to fruition."

"Advice for future Volunteers: Like anything, the more you embrace and put yourself into AMIGOS, the more you will get out of it. Push yourself to converse, even if your Spanish is rusty. Eat the food, even if your stomach tells you not to. Hike the extra mile to explore the outskirts of your community. And keep a journal so you remember the details, fill it with pieces of paper and anything that you find. You'll be glad you did later on when something small brings back a large memory."

"AMIGOS has it's priorities straight and is an organization that is truly having an impact. I know this from first hand experience and so I support whenever I can, either financially, by encouraging other potential Volunteer or through marketing and exposure. AMIGOS is a solution that really works and I look forward to our on-going relationship."

"My AMIGOS experience was crucial to developing my leadership, discipline and problem solving skills."

"Thirty-five years ago when I went on AMIGOS the world seemed like a huge place and Central America may as well have been on another planet. When I went on AMIGOS it took weeks for us to get letters from home and our only real contact with the U.S. was the ham radio (YN9KMZ). I suspect that for young people heading off on AMIGOS in these days of cell phones and the internet it doesn't feel quite so exotic. I think that as a teenager what I would have told you is that the main thing I took away from my AMIGOS experience was that people everywhere were basically the same, with similar hopes, dreams and desires."
